Prestonwood Christian’s Xavier Mitchell among 2025 MLB draft’s crop of Dallas-area talent

The standout lefty was selected by the Los Angeles Angels with the 379th overall pick in the 13th round of the draft.

Prestonwood Christian’s Xavier Mitchell was sitting in his living room with his family, just faintly listening to the 2025 MLB draft broadcasts in the background.

Then, while talking to Kisha Mitchell-Thompson, his mother, and other family members when he heard his phone ringing.

It was his agent.

The agent called to tell the left-handed pitcher that the Los Angeles Angels selected him with the 379th overall pick in the 13th round of the MLB draft Monday afternoon.

“There was doubt, but I kept my faith in God and I just had to wait patiently,” Mitchell said. “And when I got that call and the general manager was like, ‘We really want you and we’re gonna give you everything we got.’ I just had to take the offer and get the opportunity, so I’m very thankful.”

Mitchell, a Texas signee, told The Dallas Morning News that the deal with the Angels is not finalized. The 6-3 pitcher will choose between the Longhorns and the Angels.

“I’m very grateful and still don’t think it’s real,” He said. “But once I regulate my emotions later on, it’s gonna hit me hard.”

Mitchell is rated the No. 168 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He had to be shut down last season due to an injury, but in the 2024 season, but posted a 1.32 ERA and 9-0 pitching record during his junior season. Had 97 strikeouts in 53 innings pitched and was first-team all-state. Mitchell was also on the Team USA U18 baseball team last summer and participated in the MLB combine.

James Vilade, Mitchell’s coach at Prestonwood Christian for three seasons, said he was proud to see his former player drafted.

“One of the goals along the way is getting drafted, and it’s an exciting time,” Vilade said. “It’s a new journey, and he’s shown the ability to be a draft pick. He’s been a great amateur pitcher, and now he’s gonna have a chance to go be a professional pitcher.”

Ben Abeldt (TCU, P) – Texas Rangers, 5th round (No. 205 overall)

  • Background: Former McKinney Boyd standout; District 5-6A MVP as a junior and an All-Area selection.
  • At TCU: As a sophomore, led team with 1.83 ERA in team-high 25 relief appearances (one start), going 3-0 with eight saves before a season-ending injury ahead of his junior year.

Owen Proksch (Duke, P) – Texas Rangers, 9th round (No. 265 overall)

  • Projected slot value: $205,000
  • 2025 stats: Career-high 91 strikeouts in 65.1 innings, held opponents to .224 average.
  • At Southlake Carroll: District 4-6A MVP and an all-state selection.

Matthew Boughton (Covenant Christian/Texas A&M signee, SS) – Chicago White Sox, 11th round (No. 316 overall)

  • Senior stats: .473 BA, 11 doubles, 6 HR, 26 RBIs, 26 BB, only six strikeouts.
  • Position: Shortstop.

Easton Carmichael (Oklahoma, C) – Pittsburgh Pirates, 3rd round (No. 82 overall)

  • Projected slot value: $975,500
  • Background: Former Prosper standout; finished OU career 7th in RBIs (174) and 10th in triples (13).
  • Notable: Recorded 93 hits in 2024 (16th-most in program single-season history).
  • Combine participant: Ranked No. 93 prospect by MLB Pipeline.

Dominick Reid (Abilene Christian, RHP) – Chicago Cubs, 3rd round (No. 90 overall)

  • Projected slot value: $865,000
  • 2025 stats: 3.26 ERA, 112 strikeouts in 88.1 IP.
  • High school: First-team All-Area (2022) after posting 0.94 ERA in 66.2 IP at Frisco Lone Star.

Colton Shaw (Yale, P) – Seattle Mariners, 7th round (No. 212 overall)

  • High school: Plano East
  • 2025 stats: 3-7 record, 4.26 ERA (team-low among qualifiers), team-high 70 strikeouts.
  • Honors: All-Ivy Second Team; two-time Ivy League Pitcher of the Week.
  • Notable: Threw a complete-game shutout vs. Brown (April 27).
